Wimbledon, Euro Cup, and Women’s US Open Golf

What a weekend of fantastic sport achievements and so much to learn from the winners!!!

After losing her last two finals, Serena Williams wins her 22nd Grand Slam tennis championship tying Steffi Graf for second as all-time winners. Andy Murray wins Wimbledon after losing the 2016 finals of the Australian and French Opens. Portugal, the underdog, wins their first EURO Cup in the country’s history. Brittany Lang wins her first major championship in her 10-year golf career.

What can we learn from these winners? The first word that comes to mind is commitment. All these athletes have felt the agony of defeat many times over. Winning is never taken for granted as they know that putting themselves in a situation to achieve their goals does not automatically happen every time they compete as competition is very fierce. Despite their upsetting experiences, their remained committed to continue striving to achieve their dreams.

Their joy to having achieved their ultimate goals was clearly demonstrated when they won their championships. Murray could hardly contain his tears of joy. Cristiano Ronaldo, the great Portuguese player, was equally in tears when the team clinched the trophy. Serena was ecstatic when she won the last point of her match. There is a lot of effort and commitment behind these achievements and this is something we can all learn from them.

When we experience defeat, we can certainly benefit by taking a look at these athletes and embrace that learning and triumph are achieved by learning from those upsetting experiences and continue being committed to achieving our goals. It is an old cliché, but staying committed to the process to achieve our goals can eventually lead us to lift our trophies, as well.

Something to learn from those top athletes:

1. Remain committed to what you want to achieve and see all your experiences as part of the learning curve.
2. Celebrate the little steps you accomplish; don’t wait to celebrate only when you win the championship, but rather pat yourself in the back for staying committed to your goals.
